Metaphase is the stage where chromosomes lie on the equator of the achromatic spindle.
Metaphase is the second stage of cell division. It lies between prophase and anaphase. Here the chromosomes are actually at their second-most condensed and coiled stage. The spindle fibres guide them so that they line up in the middle of the dividing cell. Then they become arranged on a plane which is equidistant from the two poles; this plate is called the metaphase plate.
