Bromine water test is used to differentiate chemically between butter and cooking oil. Butter doesn't decolourise bromine water showing that it is saturated. on the other hand cooking oil decolourise bromine water showing it is an unsaturated compound.

There are many chemical tests , which we can perform to distinguish between the butter and the cooking oil. But,the most easy chemical test is bromine water test.If we mix bromine water in butter and cooking oil,the cooking oil will be decolourised due to the presence of unsaturated hydrocarbons in it.........
