It is largest phylum of animal kingdom with about 900,000 known species.

They are Characterized by following characters :-

\bigstar segmented body bears jointed appendages.

\bigstar Chitinous Cuticle forms exoskeleton.

\bigstar Body divisible into head, thorax and abdomen; head and thorax often fused to form cephalothorax.

\bigstar Haemocoel is filled with colourless blood called haemolymph.

\bigstar Open type of circulatory system is present.

\bigstar Respiration by general body surface, gills, trachea or book lungs.

\bigstar Excretory organs are green gland or malpighian tubules.

\bigstar Sensory organs well developed. compound eyes are present for sight, antennae and statocysts for balancing. Taste and sound receptors are also present.
