It is used by geologists, paleontologists, and other Earth scientists to describe the timing and relationships of events that have occurred during Earth's history. The table of geologic time spans, presented here, agree with the nomenclature, dates and standard color codes set forth by the International Commission on Stratigraphy (ICS).

Geological records simply indicates the history of earth as recorded in the rocks that make up its crust,the way fossils are in strata gives an idea about earth how it was billion of years ago

• The geologic history of the planet's evolution and developmental changes is recorded in its rocks
• Geologists have divided the geologic record into periods that can be organized onto a time scale
• The major division is Eras which is defined as chapters in earth's history where each era is different from another
• Eras are further divided into periods(based on the nature of rocks and fossils found)
• Subdivision of periods are called epochs
• With regard to geologic record,life on earth is first seen about 3,500,000,000 years ago which means for about 1,000,000,000 years from the time earth first formed there was no life on the planet
• The oldest primitive fossils found were simple prokaryotic organisms
• The first eukaryotic organisms appeared about 1,800,000,000 years ago
• During the Cambrian period of the Paleozoic era an explosion of multicellular life in the sea took place
• Continuous explosion occurred going from marine invertebrates to the beginning of actual fishes
• The dinosaurs came on the scene during Triassic period and birds and mammals were seen during the Jurassic period
• Charles Lyell is considered as the father of modern geology who proofed that earth's surface was the result of natural forces operating very slowly over million years
• Somewhat during the Paleocene epoch of the Cenozoic era,the Age of Mammals began
• Around 2,000,000 years ago,Homo habilis appeared and was the first human species to be given the genus name Homo,meaning man
• Because of geologic record scientists came to know that phenomenon like continental drift(movement of plates on earth's crust) is responsible for the current position of continents
