When Hitler took over power in Germany in 1933, the German economy was suffering greatly due to the Great Depression. There was massive unemployment and both agricultural and industrial production had declined. Hitler took several steps to reconstruct the German economy.

1.  Hitler launched a massive scheme to improve public infrastructure in Germany. New dams, railroads and highways (autobahns) were built. This led to higher employment, greater demand for food and industrial products and higher productivity in industry and agriculture.

2. Hitler also launched a scheme to sponsor public architecture on a massive scale. Vast new government buildings and stadiums were built. Two such stadiums were the Berlin Olympic stadium and the Nuremberg Rally Grounds where the Nazi party used to hold its annual rallies. There massive construction projects created employment opportunities for the people.

3. Hitler appointed Hjalmar Schacht as his economics minister who then played an important role in securing German reconstruction. He ensured adequate availability of public funds for the infrastructure construction schemes. He also negotiated several foreign trade agreements with different countries to ensure that Germany could buy vital raw materials by paying for them in German currency. This cured the foreign exchange deficit that had crippled the German economy during the Weimar Republic.

4. Finally, Hitler launched a massive remilitarisation campaign in Germany anticipating war. This again created employment opportunities and helped cure the effects of the Great Depression.
