Our National Health Policy of 2002 has been drawn with an aim to improve the accessibility of health care, family welfare and nutrition specially to the under-privileged section of the society. With this aim in view, there has been a considerable increase in the personnel involved in health care sector at all levels - primary, secondary and tertiary and also private health care institutions.

There has also been exponential increase in the number of beds, dispensaries, primary health centres, doctors and nurses between 1951 to 2001. The National Health Policy, 2002 also seeks to decrease infant mortality rates, increase life expectancy and lower death rates among children due to malnutrition and lack of medical facilities.
