Classification Of Elements On The Basis Of Their Electronic Configuration. On the basis of electronic configuration, the elements may be divided into four groups, that is s, p, d & f. This division is based on the name of orbital which receives the valence electron.

Classification of elements on the basis of the electronic configuration

1.  The Aufbau principle and the electronic configuration of atoms provide theoretical foundation for the periodic classification.

2. This similarity arises because these elements have the same number of electrons in their outermost shells.

3. Elements are classified into four blocked based on the orbital into which the differentiating electron enters:

 (a) s-block elements

 (b) p-block elements

 (c) d-block elements

 (d) f-block elements
