The main decline of Mughals in India began after the death of Aurangzeb due the war of succesions by his three sons. However there were other following reasons also-
Financial crisis- Aurangzeb’ s military expenditure and policies created a huge drain on the exchequer treasury which was already effected due to Shah jahan’s dream constructions. There was neither enough money nor jagirs to assign to various officers. This led to rivalry among the nobles.
Weak succesors - Another reason for the downfall was the weak and inefficient successors of Aurangzeb. They were more indulge in there own luxuries than to see the downfall of their empire.
Rise of Marathas- During the reign of Aurangzeb due to his stringent policies and religious laws he lost support of many rajput provinces which indeed weakened his mughal empire. Also it was accompanied with the rise of Marathas under peshwas. Though Marathas did not succeeded much however the were created string opposition for the Mughals in West.
Nadir Shahs Invasion- Nadir Shah, the ruler of Persia, attacked Punjab in 1739. He defeated Mohammad Shah and imprisoned him. Nadir Shah marched towards Delhi. Nadir Shah gained enormous wealth from looting Delhi. The invasion gave a crushing blow to the already tottering empire.
