"Second Carnatic War:
Causes:
Two major factors led to the second Carnatic War:
1) Lack of unity among the Indian rulers.
2) Power striggle between the French and the British East India Companies.
When the Nawab of Hyderabad, Asaf Jah, died, a war of succession broke out between his son, Nasir Jung and his grandson, Musaffar Jung.
On the other hand, there was power struggle between Chanda Sahib and Muhammad Ali for the Carnatic kingdom.
The French supported Muzaffar Jung and Chanda Sahib whereas the English supported Nasir Jung and Muhammad Ali.
This is said to be the beginning of the second Carnatic War which was actually a Anglo-French war.
Course:
The war ran a course of five years from 1749 to 1754. During the Battle of Ambur, 1749, the Nawab of Arcot was defeated and killed by the French. As a result, Muhammad Ali fled from Arcot and joined the English. The French then declared Chanda Sahib as the Nawab of Carnatic region. The French also killed Nasir Jung and made Muzaffar Jung as the Nawab of Hyderabad. This established the French supremacy over the British and were gifted four districts on the Coromandel coast. Dupleix was made the French Governor of Carnatic region.
Through a tactical ploy, Robert Clive defeated Chanda Sahib and acquired Arcot. This event is known as the Siege of Arcot, 1751. He made Muhammad Ali as the Nawab of Carnatic.
Results:
This was an undeclared war between the French and the British and was thus condemned by both the governments. Due to the victory of the British, Godeheu was made the Governor and the Treaty of Pondicherry was signed in 1754. According to the treaty, both the French and English were to avoid involvement in the internal politics of these regions.
This war also marked the increase of British influence in India.
Third Carnatic War:
Causes:
The seven years Anglo-French war is said to be the cause of the third Carnatic war.
Course:
The third Carnatic War spread to various parts of India. The English defeated Siraj-ud-Daulah in the Battle of Plassey,1757 and acquired Chandan Nagar. The French army were defeated by the British in the Battle of Wandiwash,1756 and as result several places such as Karaikal, Mahe, Jinji, Madras and Pondicherry came under the British.
Results:
The war came to an end in 1763 with the signing of Treaty of Paris. Chandan Nagar and Pondicherry were returned to French. They were allowed to have trade posts in India but could not manage them on their own. The third Carnatic war established British rule and ended the French rule in India."
