The Maratha Empire was founded by the Maratha warrior-hero Chhatrapati (Emperor) Shivaji, in response to the chaos and misrule that prevailed in the Deccans in the late 17th century. This occurred as the Mughal Empire expanded into southern India.

The Maratha Empire at its peak stretched from Peshawar (modern-day Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan) in the North, to Tamil Nadu in the South and Orissa in the east, to Gujarat in the West.

The empire formally existed from 1674 with the coronation of Shivaji as the Chhatrapati and ended in 1818 with the defeat of Peshwa Bajirao II by the hands of the British East India Company. The Marathas are credited to a large extent for ending Mughal rule in India.
