carboxylic acid is an another name for ethanoic acid.
the activity to differentiate between acid and alcohol is as follows:-
take a two test tubes carrying ethanol and acid separately. now put a small amount of sodium bicarbonate or sodium carbonate. the test tube carrying acid will produce effervescence as carbon dioxide is evolved, and the test tube carrying alcohol will show no reaction.
activity no.2
ethanol is unsaturated carbon compound, so when we put alcohol is potassium permanent, the colour of permanent changes from pink to colour less.
by these two activities we can differentiate between acid and alcohol.
