An example of a life event which is likely to be stressful and reasons why it cause different degrees of stress to the person experiencing it:

  • Loosing a job is a life event which is likely to be a cause of stress to an individual.
  • A response to stress largely depends on the events interpreted, this was developed by Lazorus in his Cognitive theory of stress.
  • A new event may be positive, negative or neutral. Loosing a job is a negative event can be appraised for its harm.
  • If appraisal is harm the assessment of the damage, will result in high stress.
  • Some individuals are able to cope up and understand to meet the harm, this can be concluded by secondary appraisal.
