Haldia is a port in West Bengal which was developed asa subsidiary port so as to relieve increasing pressure on the port of Kolkatta
Explanation:
- The Port of Haldia is one of west Bengal's largest seaports and industrial cities. The Port of Haldia lies approximate to the mouth of one of the distributoraies of the , the Hugli River, about 50 km southwest of Kolkata (formerly Calcutta). It is currently being developed to serve Kolkata as a commercial port for bulk cargo
- Haldia port has been built at the meeting place of the Haldi River and Hooghly river. Kolkata Port Trust has been created in this port as the port's partner. So it is not a port. It is an official dock complex.
- It has a large backland covering West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, the Madhya Pradesh, Assam and two neighboring countries in the Northeast of India, namely Nepal and Bhutan and Tíbet (China).
- The port's main imports are chemical, petroleum, and parts. Exports include steel, coal, and iron ore.
- There are a large number of factories in the port of Haldia, many of them from foreign companies such as Mitsubishi Chemicals. It is also the basis for the Coast Guard in India, with two of the six hovercrafts belonging to the Coastguard. More than 170,000 people were living in Haldia Harbour in 2001.
