Ishwar chandra vidhyasagar was a bengali polymath from the Indian subcontinent and a key figure of the bengal resanaissance.He was a philosopher, writer,publisher and also a great social reformer.

He had worked to uplift the status of women in india especially in his native bengal. He wanted to changed the orthodox hindi society from within. Ishwar chandra vidhyasagar introduced the practice of widow remarriage and worked against polygamy. He opened many schools for women education. He was also known as 'Daya-r Sagar' or 'karunar Sagar' for his charitable nature and generosity.
