Hari and Anil are fictional characters from the short story ‘The Thief’ by Ruskin Bond.

Anil employs Hari as a cook even though he could not afford to pay him because Hari wanted to become literate and wanted a place where he could be fed.

Anil had no money to pay Hari but he agreed to teach Hari how to write sentences, how to write his name in return of being provided home cooked meals.

Hari was homeless . Anil was a kind hearted man and so he decided to keep him as a cook though he had no money to pay him . But he agreed to teach Hari bow to read and write. This might give him respect in future .
