It was fairly well developed in 1947, like the rest of undivided India.
But the network has become much smaller since then. It would seem that the Pakistan government is not very interested in the railways, and has given more importance to road transport.
Many of the branch lines existing in 1947 ended up with very low traffic and were losing money, and were closed.
