Yes it is very true that double coincidence of want is a necessary condition for barter system to work.It is also one of its function.To understand it better lets take an example:

Let there be 3 persons namely A B and C where A is a wheat farmer B a garment seller and C has a footwear shop if A wants to purchase a pair of shoes then he has to make sure that C wants wheat if not(i.e in absence of double coincidence of wants) then he wont be able to purchase them similarly if C wants a shirt but doesn't want shoes instead he wants wheat then again C also can't exchange the commodity.One can say that they all can get organised yet there are other drawbacks for instance no specific measure of value high costs to organise such a structure etc.
