Migration

Humans moved from place to place on an occasional basis. This movement is termed as migration. They would migrate looking for necessary resources, finding a port in a storm, escaping disasters etc. Many people were migrants simply for their interest in exploring. But in the olden times, people migrated mainly for these three reasons:

  • Scarcity in resources

When sometimes there was shortage of resources such as food and water or other day-to-day needs, people migrated to another place where they could find the necessary supplies in a desirable amount. Some nomadic tribes in the past also travelled from place to place because it was a part of their livelihood. They would:

→ Rear and sell animals

→ Wander as merchants

→ Trade commodities with agriculturists and get other products in return

  • Occurrence of natural disasters

When people were not prepared for calamities that occurred all of a sudden, they had to gradually get away from the place and migrate to another place of safety. These natural disasters included:

→ Floods

→ Droughts

→ Forest fires

→ Earthquakes

→ Volcanic eruptions, etc.

  • Change in climate

Climate also had a great impact on the lifestyle of people: their food, their health and their livelihood. Severe climatic conditions could:

→ Destroy the settlements and shelters people had lived in

→ Cause grave havoc on the population

→ Affect their daily bread

It also often happened that people were not able to adjust to new climatic conditions. As a result, the people either temporarily or permanently leave in search of another place that would have their favourable climate.
