★Question

•Give any two examples of Ascomycetes fungi

★Answer:

• Ascomycota is the largest phylum of Fungi, and thus many important fungi belong to it. Most moulds, lichens are yeasts are members of the group, but only a handful of mushroom forming fungi belong to it (in particular, those that form cup-shaped fruiting bodies).

●Regarding examples…

-Saccharomyces cerevisiae:

  • Baker’s yeast, and producer of most of the alcohol we consume. It’s also a very important model organism for research and you can use it to make bread, too.

-Cordyceps militaris:

  • If you know the videogame The last of us, it’s the zombie-causing fungi. In reality it is an insect pathogen, but it’s cool nonetheless.

-Penicillium sp.:

  • This is a very common genus of airborne molds that are common causes of fruit rot, such as the blue mold in oranges. They produce many toxines that can cause health problems, and they are also the fungus that contaminated Fleming’s agar plates and led him to discover the penicillin. Some Penicillium species are used for production of certain types of cheese, such a Roquefort.

-Xanthoria parietina:

  • This is a very common and easy to identify yeallow-orange lichen. It’s also a member of the phylum, like 98% of lichens.

-Tuber melanosporum:

  • The truffle. You know, those black amorphous things that cost an absurd amount of money and are collected using pigs. They are symbiotic organisms associated to the roots of certain trees.

-Pseudogymnoascus destructans:

  • Is a white mold that causes the “white nose syndrom” in bats, a deadly disease that is affecting bat populations across North America.

-Many plant pathogens, including those that affect crops, are members of diverse genera in the Ascomycota. This includes the genera Fusarium, Colletotrichum, Botrytis, Zymoseptoria or Monilinia, to name just a few.

-The black fungi, that are several groups of highly pigmented fungi adapted to resist in very extreme conditions, mostly living inside pores on rocks. They grow very slowly and they need very little resources, and they have been found in the driest deserts and the coldest parts of Antarctica. Some of these are able to grow on human nails, too.
