Potential is the capacity to sustain something. like a bottle of 1 litre has capacity of 1 litre .so it have potential of 1 litre.
in physics electrostatic potential is the amount of work needed to move a unit positive chargr from a reference point to a specific point inside the field without producing any acceleration.
