1) Element combining to form a compound:

Iron+sulphur=Iron sulphide

Or, Fe+S---->FeS

2)Compounds breaking to form elements:

Water------> hydrogen+oxygen

Or,2H20 ------>2H2+ O2

3) Compounds combing to form new compounds:

Copper oxide+ carbon dioxide---->Copper carbonate

Or,CuO+ CO2---->CuCO3

In reaction 1) and 3) heat is required, while i reaction 2) takes place when an electric current is passed through water.
