Nitrogen is used as proteins for the plants as

• soluble nitrates
• the atmospheric nitrogen is used by the plants by the nodules(symbiotic bacteria) with the combination of calcium carbonate (in the soil) ,forms soluble nitrates.
• When lightning,the nitric oxide combines with water has rain and falls on the soil, soluble nitrates are formed
