The core, the mantle and the crust forms the layer of the interior earth.

The interior of earth is made of different types of materials varying in physical and chemical properties like temperature, density, mass etc.

Each layer is separated by a transition zone called discontinuities.

Conrad, Mohorovicic, Repiti, Gutenberg and Lehman are the five types of discontinuities found in the earth’s interior.

Several free-floating rocky plates are found between the earth’s crust and its mantle. When these rocky plates collide against each other, slide upon each other or move away from each other, it causes orogeny. Orogeny is the process whereby mountains and deep craters are formed as a result of earthquakes and volcanoes caused by movement of these rocky plates.

Movement of these rocky plates is known as Plate Tectonics. Plate Tectonics is a continuous process and as a result, the interior layer of earth is not a single smooth surface, but with discontinuities.
