The spleen plays multiple supporting roles in the body. It acts as filter for blood as part of the immune system. Old Red Blood Cells are recycled here, and platelets and White Blood Cells stored there. The spleen also helps fight certain kinds of bacteria that cause pneumonia and meningitis.

The main function of spleen is to filter blood. Old RBCs are recycled and platelets and WBCs are stored here.

If spleen detects potentially harmful bacteria or viruses, along with lymph nodes it produces WBCs (lymphocytes). These lymphocytes immune the body to fight the virus.
