The animals in Phylum Chordata share some essential characteristics that appear at a certain stage at the time of their development, that is, it comprises of, a notochord, which forms the supporting axis of the body in the lowest chordates and lowest vertebrates, and in embryos of higher vertebrates.

The pharyngeal gill slits, that is, a feature found in both Chordata and hemichordates, and are used by species at the time of feeding; endostyle; a dorsal hollow nerve cord; and a post-anal tail.

Classification of Labeo rohita:

Kingdom - Animalia; Phylum - Chordata; Sub-phylum - Vertebrata; Class - Actinopterygii; Order - Cypriniformes; Family - Cyprinidae; Subfamily - Labeonionae; Genus - Labeo; Species - Labeo rohita. The classification of the fish is done due to the presence of cartilage and bones. It is a freshwater bony-fish.
