In this poem, there is a young and beautiful lady named Anne Gregory. She's having blonde hair. Young man loves her only because of her hairs. Her hairs which was falling on her ears look like the ramparts surrounding a castle. Poet said, no one would love her for herself alone. No one cares for her inner beauty and the mobility of her soul. Her yellow hair are the only causes for their attraction.

Anne Gregory herself settles the issue in the second stanza. She says that she's free to choose which colour she uses to dye her hairs. She can dye her hairs brown or black or of the carrot colour. Any of the young man should fall in love with her after judging her merits. She should be loved for herself alone.

Poet resolves the issue in the last stanza. After that he quotes a religious text. It is beyond humans not to be attracted by physical appearance. Humans can ve easily swayed by outwardly appearance. Only god is able to withstand temptations of beauty. Human without god's strength simply can't look beyond physical appearance.
