If innovation was solely motivated by need, MySpace would not have been able to rule the world, while Friendster existed; Facebook could not have gained market traction when MySpace would have ruled the social networking roost. The same can be said of Gmail vs Yahoo Mail vs Hotmail. The future of Google+ is a completely different topic and only time can tell how that will fare. On the lighter side, though - the biggest reason to join Google+ for now is that your Mom isn't there (yet)!
