There are two methods of propagating plants vegetatively: natural and artificial.

The natural method of vegetative propagation utilizes plant organs other than the seed and spore

In contrast, the artificial method of vegetative propagation involves drastic manipulation of plant parts.

In some plants vegetative parts such as roots, stem, leaf can be used to produce new plants. this type of reproduction is known as vegetative reproduction.it can be done by natural as well as artificial methods.

VEGETATIVE REPRODUCTION BY ARTIFICIAL MEANS :

CUTTING:
→It involves cutting off part of stem and placing it in moist soil.after sometime these stems develop roots at the base and grow new plants.
→Examples:sugarcane,rose,hibiscus,bougainvillea

GRAFTING:
→the scion(a bud or cutting that has several buds) of one plant is placed over the stock(cut stems with roots of another plant are firmly tied together).
→the stock supplies water and minerals to the scion.new cells develop int he area where they are joined and a new variety of plant develops.
→Common examples are mango,guava

LAYERING:
→In this process a young branch is lowered down and bent towards the ground and covered by soil, forming a layer, after sometime roots arise from branch and grow downwards.
→the branch can be cut off and allowed to group into new plant. ex:grapes, jasmine

TISSUE CULTURE:
→A small piece of tissue(ex plant) is cut from growing part of plant
→the tissue piece is kept in medium rich in nutrients which are then shifted to a pot.
→cell division results in formation of callus which form multiple shoots

VEGETATIVE REPRODUCTION BY NATURAL METHODS:

ROOTS:
→Tuberous roots of dahlia, sweet potato and asparagus can be set aside for multiplication in the next season, these have food stored in them.

LEAVES:
→Leaves of plants such as bryophyllum develop small buds called adventitious buds on their margin.these buds grow into new plants when the leaf falls from the parent plant and comes in contact with soil.

STEMS:
→Rhizomes:they have buds which give rise to new plants.ex:ginger, tumeric, banana
→Bulbs:they are very short underground stems encased in thickened fleshy bulb scales(which are modified leaves).the scales serves as sites of food storage.
ex:onion
→tubers:they have buds in the eyes, which give rise to new plants.eg:potato
→corms:they are lots of rhizomes joined together which develop into new plants. eg:gladiolus.
→runners:Horizontal stems arise from the base of the erect shoot, grow horizontally in the soil and then comes out to form new aerial shoot.eg:chrysanthemum
→horizontal stems:they have horizontal stems growing parallel to the ground almost touching it.new roots sprout from the nodes.eg:oxalis
