Give one example each of: (i) Squamous epithelium (ii) Columnar epithelium
Answers
Squamous epithelium : layer(s) of flat cells .(a single celled one - in case of simple squamous )
being single celled layer , it is permeable to small molecules to pass through by the processes like diffusion .
and thus have obvious locations like capillaries , alveoli , glomerulus .
Columnar epithelium : layer(s) of cuboidal cells . cilia may or may not be present .simple ones play a role in secretion, absorption, immunity, fertility, digestion and respiration
ciliated : respiratory tract , Fallopian tubes , uterus
non ciliated : gastrointestinal tract
Squamous epithelium tissue is a type of tissue , which is found at the exposed surface of the body. It form the inner lining of the mouth, secretory glands, lining of hollow part of organ such as heart, lungs, ears, eyes, urogenital tract etc.
Epithelial tissue perform number of functions such as protection against radiation damage, abrasion, chemical stress and invasion by pathogens.
Squamous Epithelium: These are type of epithelial cells which are thin, flat and are closely packed. It is found in the cavities of oesophagus, mouth, blood vessels and mouth. It protect the tissue from mechanical injury or damage and prevent the entry of germs.
Columnar Epithelium: These cell are column like and pillar like in shape, hence named as columnar epithelium. These types of cells are found in lining of intestine and stomach. Its main function include the digestion and absorption of food.
