Many plants undergo asexual reproduction or vegetative propagation from a fragment of any part of the parent plant.

• Grafting is a very primitive method of vegetative propagation where plants are produced by combining the favourable stem characteristics with different root characteristics.
• The stem of one plant (scion) is cut obliquely and placed over the cut root portion (stock). The vascular systems of the two plants fuse and a hybrid plant is formed.
