A decomposition reaction is a type of chemical reaction in which a single compound breaks down into 2 or more elements or new compounds.

Examples-due to heat

1) calcium carbonate decomposes in calcium oxide & carbon dioxide when heated.

2)When heated strongly potassium chlorate decomposes into potassium chlorite and oxygen.

Examples - Due to light

1) silver chloride decomposes into silver and chlorine .

2) hydrogen peroxide decomposes into water and oxygen.

ex- due to electricity.

1)water decomposes into hydrogen and oxygen.

2)sodium chloride decomposes into sodium and chlorine.

1) THERMAL DECOMPOSITION REACTION : When the decomposition reaction carried by heat.

Example = 2FeSO4 --heat-- Fe2O3 + SO2 + SO3

2) ELECTRICITY DECOMPOSITION REACTION : When the decomposition reaction carried by electric current.

Example = 2H2 + O2 --electric current-- H2

2) SUNLIGHT DECOMPOSITION REACTION : When the decomposition reaction carried by sunlight.

Example = 2AgCl --sunlight-- 2Ag + Cl2
