One of the best examples which shows that the British law was arbitrary was the Rowlatt Act. This act was also called the Black Act or the The Anarchical and Revolutionary Crimes Act. It was undoubtedly a legislative act and was passed by the Imperial Legislative Council. This council was present in Delhi. It allowed the British government to arrest any person of India without any prior trial if he/she is suspected to commit any particular crime. The government could keep the person in prison for upto 2 years. It was recommended by the Rowlatt Committee, whose president was Sidney Rowlatt, a British judge. This act was the reason of anger for many Indian leaders as well as the common mass. Mahatma Gandhi was one such leader.

The Rowlatt Act was one of the best cases that proved British rule was arbitrary.

Explanation:

  • Often named this act the Black Act or the Anarchical and Disruptive Crimes Act. It was, without a doubt, a constitutional act and was approved by the Imperial Legislative Council. In Delhi, the council was present.
  • This allowed the Uk Government to arrest any Indian citizen without any proper hearing if he / she were accused of committing any serious crime. The government could retain the offender up to 2 years in jail. The Rowlatt Commission, whose chairman was Sidney Rowlatt, a British lawyer, has proposed this.
  • To many Indian leaders this act was the cause to frustration, as well as the popular mass. Another such figure had been Mahatma Gandhi.
