There are two types of satellites ::  

  • Natural Satellites –  

The heavenly bodies which revolves around a planet or star.  

Example :  

Moon  

  • A celestial object that revolves around a planet is known as a natural satellite or moon of the planet. Most planets have moons revolving around them. As you’ve already seen, the inner planets ( Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars ) have fewer moons, while the outer planets ( Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune ) have many moons revolving around them.  

  • Artificial Satellites –  

The man-made bodies sent into space to revolve around a heavenly body are called artificial satellites. The first artificial satellite was sent by USSR on 4 October 1957.
