Like for any other product, closeness to a market is important for steel. But, the history of industrialisation has shown that closeness to sources of raw material is more important for this heavy industry. The classic examples are Pittsburgh in U.S.A. and Durgapur, Bokaro and Jamshedpur in India. Iron Ore, Coal and Chromate mines are important sources of some of the most vital requirements for steel industry;hence, steel plants have come up in these places.
