air holes of a gas burner have to be adjusted when the heated vessels get blackened by the flame.

This is so that oxgen enters and the fuel is burnt completely If fuel doesnt burn completely , it results in wasteage of fuel and blackening of vessel. If the vessels get blackened it implies that the fuel is not burning completely and hence we have to adjust them
