Did former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee take the lead in improving Pakistan and India's relations?
AB Vajpayee was clear in his approach to have good relation with Pakistan and all other neighbours. He proposed the Delhi Lahore Bus service. He along with some leaders , film stars, sports persons and artists went to Lahore in the Bus. He was received by PK PM Nawaz Sheriff at Wagha border. They had fruitful discussion at Lahore. There was joint declaration at Lahore to resolve all outstanding issues between India and Pakistan. But the Pakistan Army did not liked good relation with India. After that there was incursion in Kargil from Pakistan. Then there was war at Kargil. When Musharaff took over as the martial administrator Atalji also tried to restore peace between India and Pakistan. There was series of discussions. There was a summit at Agra. But at the last moment Musharaff did not agree to sign any agreement with India. He agreed to sign a ceasefire agreement along LOC in Kashmir. The ceasefire agreement stands today. But Pakistan Army vitiated the atmoshphere for their own interest. AB Vajpayee is a statesman. Country will remember his contributions in future.
