ylahari: Physical barrier through keratinocytes attached together via cell–cell junctionsand associated to cytoskeletal proteins, which gives the epidermis its mechanical strength. And The ability of the skin to hold water is primarily due to the stratum corneum and is critical for maintaining healthy skin.Lipids arranged through a gradient and in an organized manner between the cells of the stratum corneum form a barrier to transepidermal water loss
ylahari: see it

The epidermis as a protective layer to plants:
The epidermis, is a single layer of cells that forms the outer covering of plant flowers, stems, leaves and roots. The covering is in all these structures except at the part where it is replaced by a periderm.
The cells of the epidermis are tightly packed together forming a mechanical barrier. This mechanical barrier is important to protect against bacterial infection and other harsh environmental conditions.
The epidermis is covered by both cutin and cuticle( which provides waxy protective layer). These two compounds protect the plant from excessive loss of water, the effects of direct sunlight and wind.
