Hey mate

To understand this, first we must know what oxidation is.

Oxidation is the process of gain of oxygen to a compound due to which its chemical composition changes. It may also be defined as the loss of hydrogen atoms or loss of electrons. An oxidizing agent is necessary to bring about this change

This oxidation process maybe aerobic or anaerobic.

Aerobic oxidation is the process by which the metabolism of sugars and fatty acids take place in the presence of oxygen to produce energy giving ATP.

Looking at the reaction of oxidation of glucose (image attached) we see that glucose is oxidised in the presence of oxygen.

Thus, oxygen is necessary for the complete oxidation of glucose because it is an aerobic reaction and because oxygen is the oxidizing agent.

The process of glycolysis refers to breaking down of glucose into two molecules of pyruvic acid.

Reasons:

Absence of Oxygen: The fermentation of lactic acid will occur when there is no oxygen. The pyruvic acid is then converted into lactic b. The pyruvic acid is also broken down into alcohol without the presence of oxygen.

Presence of Oxygen: During the Kerb’s cycle, acetyl CoA is formed from pyruvic acid when oxygen is present and is responsible for the complete oxidation of glucose.

Hence, oxygen is required for the complete oxidation of glucose.
