Lichen is a living partnership between a fungus and algae because the algae present in the relationship produces food whereas the fungus present in the relationship provides shelter to the entire group.

The alga contains the chlorophyll pigment and thereby it is capable of synthesizing food but the fungus does not contain the chlorophyll pigment and so they provide the shelter. They both occur in perfect symbiosis like a single organism itself
