Give reason for the following statement
1. Centrifugation can be used for separating an insoluble heavier solid present in an insoluble solid liquid mixture.
2. The filter paper made into a cone and placed in a funnel for filtering out the solid particles in solid liquid mixture should be moistened before placing

Hey there,

● Centrifugation-
- During centrifugation, the acceleration at centripetal force causes denser substances to separate out along the radial direction at the bottom of the tube.
- Therefore, it's used separate insoluble solid from liquids.

● Filtration -
- Wetting of filter paper prevents the formation of multi-layer systems in the filter flask.
- This makes it stick to flask and no solid comes under it.
- Hence, filter paper is moistened with solution before filtration.

Hope it helps...

  1. The centrifugation process is also known as spinning technique. The insoluble heavier solid which is present in insoluble solid liquid mixture is separated by the technique centrifugation. The solid mass or precipitate is settled down and clear solution present at the top is called centrifugate. Best example for centrifugation process is spinner in washing machine
  2. The filter paper is used to separate solid particles and the liquid from the solid-liquid mixture. The filter paper is folded into a funnel shape. The filter paper is inserted or kept at the top of the funnel. The filter paper should be moistened because then only the filter paper seated properly at the funnel surface without air gap. If there is a air gap means the filtration is not proper.
