It is done to ensure proper nutrition to the developing embryo, if the egg/ovum gets fertilised by the sperm and gets implanted on the endometrial wall of the uterus.

The ovary releases one egg every month and so the uterus prepares itself every month to receive a fertilised egg. Its lining becomes thick and spongy. This is required for nourishing the embryo if fertilisation taken place. Now, if the egg is not fertilised, then this lining is not needed, it slowly breaks and comes out through the vagina as blood and mucous. This cycle takes place every month and is known as menstruation.
