The Somnath Temple was a fabulous Temple with a unique architectural marvel. The main idol in the sanctum sanctorum was a levitating linga. This Temple was also considered to be one of the 12 Jyothirlingas in the country and countless legends were associated with the temple. Also, the temple was located near a triveni sangam (the confluence of three Rivers, one of those being Saraswati). All these factors made the temple in Somnath an important pilgrimage destination.

With the influx of people came riches. Precious stones and gems of incalculable value. The gathering of people also brought precious and rare metals like Gold, Silver, Copper and Iron. This made the temple in Somnath a very alluring target for Mahmud of Ghazani who was invading India for the plunder. Moreover, destroying a temple of worship of very high significance would also serve political reasons. The most important being the spread of Islam, which was the primary reason given by every invading Turco-Afghan ruler to invade India. This reason provides a perfect excuse for assembling a large army and the costs of the military campaign.
