Explanation:
A derived unit is called so because it is the product of two more basic units. The basic unit of area is the cubic meter (m³) for volume. By derived unit, it refers to any given quantity which cannot be measured directly with any device. For eg., We can't measure density of a substance with a rule, or scale, or bucket.

Volume is a derived unit because we take the measurements of the length and the breadth of the solid and multiply them or cube them to find the volume. Hence we perform some operation on the known measurements we have in order to derive a value.
