sodium has atomic number equal to 11 and electrons are distributed as 2,8,1 in k L and M shell respectively. it requires to losse one electron to gain its octet therefore its valanvy is +1.while chlorine has 17 as its atomic number and electrons are distributed as 2,8 ,7 in K L and M shell it requires to gain 1 electron to complete its octet. so,it receives 1 electron and has the valancy of -1 to become stable

Hii There!!!
★ Electronic configuration of Na :- 2 , 8 , 1
Here, Sodium has a valency of +1 because, it has one valence electron in its outermost shell so it can lose one electron to attain its nearest noble gas configuration or we can say it can complete its octet by doing so.
★ Similarly , electronic configuration of Cl :- 2 , 8 , 7.
Since, it has 7 electrons in its valence shell so it will gain one electron to complete its octet.
Hence, its valency is -1.
