Actually the non metallic character decreases down the group.

This is because the size of atom increases because of successive addition of shells.

Thus the effective nuclear charge of nucleus for incoming electron decreases.

Thereby the tendency to lose electons increases.

The non metallic character of element is the tendency to gain electrons.

as the effective nuclear charge acting on the valence shell electrons increases across a period the tendency to lose electronic will decrease down the group the effective nuclear charge experienced by valence electrons is decreasing because the outermost electrons are farther away from nucleus therefore these can be lost easily
