The proportion of nitrogen in air remains the same due to the nitrogen cycle which ensures the equal input and equal consumption of nitrogen by plants and animals.

jellyk: thank you bro for your answer. i like your answer. but it is wrong,i think.

Interesting question.

Well, absolutely, all the essential-for-life natural elemental cycles are a beautiful, stable, balanced dance [but we must never take that for granted because, just like weather systems, they are probably inherently chaotic. (chaos does not mean instability- it means sensitivity to small changes under the right circumstances)].

What is often not appreciated is the action of buffers in keeping the proportion of *free* elements extremely stable.

Buffers are a negative feedback system where higher concentrations of an element increase the activity of the buffer which leads to lower concentrations of the element. Beautiful, isn't it :)

Buffers in the nitrogen cycle include leguminous plants which have a symbiotic relationship with nitrogen-fixing bacteria in their roots.
