It's because when you add two layers, there is always air trapped between the two blankets and that acts as an additional insulation. Since air is an insulator of heat, it prevents the escape of body heat. That is why two thin blankets are usually warmer than one thick blanket. ........

Two thin blankets are rather warmer than one thick blanket because air gets trapped between them . And the air is bad conductor of heat . It doesn't pass heat from our body to the surroundings.
Hence, It is preferred to use two thin blankets rather than one thick blanket.
