The air sacs (alveoli) have a very large total surface area and a very goodblood supply. There is an exchange of gases between the air sacs and their surrounding capillary blood vessels. Oxygen diffuses from the air sac into the blood. Carbon dioxide diffuses from the blood into the air sac.

Answer:
A protein called haemoglobin in the red blood cells then carries the oxygen around your body. At the same time, carbon dioxide that is dissolved in the blood comes out of the capillaries back into the air sacs, ready to be breathed out.
