because AN IRON NAIL has more density than water . so it sinks down into water .
whereas CORK is less denser than water so it floats on water .

A cork floats in water but a nail sinks in water because -

• The water has certain amount of density. (997kg/m³)

• Now,the substances which have less density than water will surely float in the water. On the other hand, the substances which have greater density than water will sink in the water in the normal scenario.

• The cork has less density (240kg/m³) than water and the nail (of any metal) has greater density than water.

• For this less density than water, the cork floats and for this greater density than water ,the nail sinks.
