A young tender stem, which is still green in colour, has living cells, which are still capable of growth. These cells are called Meristem. On the other hand, a woody stem of a plant is composed of Sclerenchymatous cells, which are generally dead cells. The young tender stem, thus has high elasticity and tensile strength, with which, it can resist from being torn, whereas the woody stem lacks this elasticity and hence, it can easily be broken.
